Closure
|
|
The death penalty serves as a form of closure for a victim's family and friends. After a person is murdered or killed it is hard for a family or group of friends of a victim to take in so they only think it is appropriate for the murderer to be sentenced to death. Family members of a victim think it is only fair that the murderer is to be killed because that is what the victim had to suffer and this is called retribution. Once the criminal or convicted murderer is executed it allows the family and friends of a victim to live without pain and can move on in their lives in peace because they know that the murderer of their family member suffered the same fate as their family member. Closure is one of the main arguments made by people who favor capital punishment when there is a controversy over execution.
DNA Testing
In the past people have been against the death penalty because some innocent individuals have been wrongly sentenced to death for a crime they did not commit, but now that will not be a big problem because of DNA testing. New technology that has developed in recent years allows for DNA testing to occur. DNA testing allows for the death penalty to be more reliable because the probability of accusing only guilty criminals will rise greatly. DNA testing gives physical evidence to show who is guilty and who is innocent. Now innocent people will not be wrongly accused by court systems and the person who deserves capital punishment will receive it. Since new technology has developed 300 post conviction DNA testes have occurred and out of those 300 testes thirteen people were found to be innocent. Now that DNA testing exists the death penalty will be more reliable and will allow executions to keep continuing into the future.
Deterrence
Criminals and murders are often sentenced to death if the illegal activity they perform is severe enough. If it is severe enough that dangerous person must sit in jail awaiting their fate. Often times criminals wait on death row for years at a time which is good because then that guarantees that the world outside of that specific prison or jail is a safer place. Once that specific criminal is executed for illegal activity that they committed the world is even a safer place because that specific person may be dangerous and can no longer harm anyone anywhere on this earth. The death penalty guarantees each individual that is killed through execution can no longer be a harm to any person. For example if a murder is executed they are no longer a danger to society because they are no longer living. The death penalty just allows the world to be a safer environment for each individual in the world.
